11.30am Opening Ceremony with MP Jackie Doyle-Price and VIPs  heralded by Pathfinders Drum Corps.

T100 lunch follows before the character of Samuel Pepys (Mike Ostler) leads the food trail off on a two week walk around South Essex. There will be a World Food Feast that includes Nepalese, African, Asian, European cuisine.

Activities at TICC Festival on 6th July are as follows, some linked to historical anniversaries.

MUSIC & PERFORMANCE

Indonesian gamelan music (programmed by Sarah Bilby)

  • performances, workshops, community dancing
  • featuring Jagat Gamelan, Sekar Enggal and Indonesian musicians Iwan Gunawan, Hendrawati and Kyai Fatahillah, and the pupils of gamelan music school workshops.
  • marking the 150th year of The publication of The Malay Archipelago by Alfred Russel Wallace
  • sponsored by The Indonesian Embassy

Japanese music

  • performances, workshops, community dancing
  • featuring the London Okinawa Sanshinkai (associated with SOAS, University of London)
  • 120 years ago Japanese sailors perished in a Japanese ship that caught fire in Tilbury docks of which there are two memorials in Chadwell St Mary’s parish church.

 African Cultural Village

  • performances, workshops, community dancing
  • with Efua Sey Cultural Academy (drumming and acrobatics)
  • featuring Grays Pathfinders (Pathfinders Drum Corps, special songs, live band, Health Check MOT Centre, health cakes and snacks, smoothies demonstrations)

Nepalese Cultural Village

  • food, performances, community dancing
  • featuring Thurrock Nepalese (Gurkha) Community

ART ACTIVITIES

Public participation

  • Paint or draw a peace flag to mark Gandhi’s 150th birthday and his philosophy of non-violent protest with help from artist Steve Lawes, singing Dove of Peace (Ashley Palipana BYcA) and Gandhi on stilts (Bishan Mazumder). Flags will be hung as ship’s bunting to reflect the passenger liners that Gandhi travelled to Tilbury Docks in.
  • Paint a sculpture by Als Peculiarart of Henry de Grey who died 800 years ago and after whom Grays is named.
  • Butterflies of Hope is for anyone who wishes to make an origami butterfly facilitated by Amanda Mascarenhas for ROH Thurrock Community Chorus performance and reflecting the beautiful tropical butterfly illustrations from The Malay Archipelago.
  • ‘Welcome’ community textile piece for people to share their words of welcome led by Kite Spirit.

Thurrock Museum

  • Museum Collection on Tour displaying 4 objects from the archives of the Museum people of Thurrock have voted to go on tour
  • Information on Henry de Grey, Alfred Russel Wallace and The Malay Archipelago
  • Samuel Pepys commemoration coin produced by The Royal Mint marking the 350th year of Samuel Pepys last diary entry.
